January Book Haul #3

I have a confession, I am not really succeeding with the book buying ban. I think since I talked about it in a post I have actually created more havoc in my mind because I started thinking about how I didn’t buy many books last year and how I needed to catch up on the recommended reads. January is the best month for sales so I suppose I took advantage of that and bought quite a lot.

To continue with my confession, I didn’t technically buy these new books, I was given book vouchers that were stuffed to the back of a drawer and were an estimated 10 years old. I didn’t expect them to still be valid but when I looked at the back of them my eyes met the words ‘There is no time limit for these tokens’. I took a chance and visited a shop we have here in Northern Ireland called Easons and where I expected a resounding ‘No’ I was met with a ‘ We would be happy to take your vouchers.’

Of course this made me very happy and I darted around the shop as if I was on a mission to find the books I wanted. When I came across the Divergent series by Veronica Roth I was even happier to find they were on sale and so I picked up The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt too. Overall I had to add £5 to the vouchers to get my books but that is a small price to pay to walk away with four highly recommended books so although I am failing miserably at the book buying ban, I actually think that purchase was successful. This is probably not the best way to think if I want to take the ban seriously.

I bought the Divergent series because I have heard so many good things about it across the book-tube world, goodreads and throughout the increasing publicity as we edge closer to the release date of the highly anticipated movie this year. I also thought this would be a great way to tackle my Dystopian Challenge for 2014 as I set the target at 7 to 12 books to include at least one series. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as it is a genre I haven’t been inclined to try until now.

The Goldfinch is another book that I have spotted in various locations across the internet with readers praising not just the novel but also the author Donna Tartt. It is a beast of a book so when I picked it up in the shop I knew it would not only be an interesting read but edge me closer to tackling the Chunkster Challenge for 2014. I chose to read 10 books over 450 pages this year which could be spread out to at least one a month but so far I have read The Book Thief and I intend on reading the Divergent series consecutively this month and The Goldfinch probably in March which are all over 450 pages. Here is a link to the post where I talk about the different book challenges I am participating in this year; Challenge Yourself

As usual the books I hauled this month will be listed below and if you click on the title you will be directed to goodreads for the synopsis or if you’d like to read a bit more about them. If any of you are attempting a book buying ban why not leave a comment whether you are finding it easy or hard. Or have you succeeded in the ban and would like to leave me some tips which would be great because I think I am going to need them.

Divergent – Veronica Roth
Divergent UK

Insurgent – Veronica Roth
