This is the second book and follow on from If I Stay, a well-known novel which was recently released as a film last year. If I Stay tells the story of Mia, a budding musician who is left fighting for her life after a car accident with her family. Throughout the novel you follow Mia in her coma induced state as she struggles to make the tough decision of whether she wants to continue living or pass away. Little do they know, as her family and friends surround her as she is in her hospital bed, she can hear what they say and is aware of their presence. Where She Went continues the story of Mia and answers the long question of what happened to her after she made the tough decision.
As If I Stay was told from Mia’s perspective, Where She Went is told from Adam’s perspective who from the first book you are introduced to as her boyfriend. However as they now live at opposite ends of the country, one as a classical musician and the other as a rock star, it leaves the reader wondering what happened to their relationship and what the future has in hold for them both.
Once I started reading this book, I just didn’t want to put it down, it has the same addictive flow as If I Stay which I read in one day. Gayle Forman is a phenomenal writer and I was so lucky to have picked up this series because so far I cannot find a flaw. Where She Went flows beautifully and the plot seems fast paced yet the time span in the book is much slower. Before I knew it I had read over one hundred pages yet for the plot it was only a day. This is the beauty of Gayle Forman’s writing, it’s addictive, lyrically beautiful and the plot is in perfect timing with the writing. I was hooked from the first page.
I loved these characters from If I Stay and was so happy to learn that another book was to follow. Now that they have grown up and overcome some massive challenges in life it is interesting to see how they perceive the world and the futures they thought they wanted. As morbid as it sounds I was happy to see that their love story wasn’t a perfect continuation from the first book as so many novels carry this cliched message. This plot is realistic and really shows the struggle and determination of each of these individuals to live the life they want and worked for.
In amongst the realistic lives of Mia and Adam there still remains a spark of their relationship and for much of the book I was dying inside that one of them would just tell the other how they felt because their love story seems so tragic yet so perfect. I wanted for their characters to find each other again and rekindle the love and hope they had before, so I was attached to this plot until the end.
There is no doubt about it that the If I Stay series is a beautiful collection of books, I just love the plot and Gayle Forman’s writing. I am giving Where She Went a 5 out of 5 stars on goodreads because shamefully I enjoyed this book more than the first one, which is hard to say because I really enjoyed If I Stay. I would seriously recommend this entire series to anyone who hasn’t read it yet and I will definitely be picking up more books by Gayle Forman.
If anyone can recommend a Gayle Forman book or series I would really appreciate it. I have heard a lot about Just One Day, would anyone recommend it?
