Love Letters to the Dead – Ava Dellaira

This is an interesting read and one I really enjoyed. The plot follows a young girl Laurel as she grows up following the death of her sister. The story is told in the form of letters as Laurel writes to people who have died. The people she chooses to write to are equally interesting, famous people who have committed suicide or died in unknown circumstances. As Laurel begins to live the life of a teenager she is faced with coping with her sister’s death and living between her dad and aunts house. Not only is she grieving but her family still is too and Laurel lives with the guilt of her sister dying and why she couldn’t do anything to help.

The style of the plot is something I haven’t experienced in many books yet it makes the book addictive as the reader isn’t reading every single detail but is reading all the situations that Laurel feels are important. As she writes the letters she also explains how she feels and as the plot develops the readers gets a deep insight into Laurel’s life and her emotional journey in accepting her sister’s death. The writing is easy to read and flows quickly as the plot develops and I found it hard to put the book down once I started reading.

I really liked Laurels character and the realistic representation of her friends. They’re all different and Ava Dellaira shows the real problems and heart break that people experience in life. Again it seems Laurel is a real observer as she notes what her friends are going through and what she sees. This left me wondering about some of the characters and what is really going on in their lives too.

I found this to be a really interesting book and I really wanted to know what was happening. It was an emotional read as Laurel battles her feelings yet as it’s told in first person, it left a lot to the imagination about the rest of the characters. As Ava Dellaira’s debut novel, it is a powerful creation of emotion and the struggles of loss. I would definitely recommend it to any readers as it appears as a young adult novel yet addresses older situations, it is suited to many readers. Overall I am giving this a 4 out of 5 stars on goodreads and I can’t wait until Ava Dellaira brings out a new novel as no doubt it will be just as intriguing.
